First Aid & Emergency

Workplace Compliance, Trauma Response and Evacuation

This collection covers three distinct emergency requirements: the stocked first aid provision a workplace is expected to maintain, the trauma and bleeding control equipment needed when an injury is beyond first aid, and the means of getting people out of a building. It carries 115 items from First Aid Only, Dynarex, ZOLL, Evac+Chair, American Red Cross, Water-Jel and others.

Most purchasing in this category starts from a compliance requirement rather than a clinical one, and that is a legitimate starting point. But compliance defines a minimum, and the gap between a compliant cabinet and an actually useful response capability is worth understanding before choosing.

→ Part of Patient Care. Also see AED & Resuscitation, Gauze & Bandages, Advanced Dressings and PPE & Infection Control.

ANSI Class A or Class B?

The ANSI standard for workplace first aid kits defines two classes by contents and quantity: Class A for lower-risk environments, Class B with a larger and broader inventory for higher-risk ones.

Class A Class B
Designed for Typical office and low-hazard settings Higher-risk work environments
Inventory Common minor injuries Larger quantities and additional item types
Cabinet size Generally fewer shelves for the same headcount More shelves for the same headcount

Which class applies to a given workplace depends on a hazard assessment of that workplace rather than on headcount alone, and the requirements that bind an employer come from the applicable regulations and standards for their jurisdiction and industry. Confirm with your safety officer or regulator rather than selecting by cabinet size.

Class A cabinets: the 90574 for 100 people, 3 shelf metal with meds and the 91339 for 100 people.

Class B cabinets by headcount: 75 person 2 shelf with meds and without; 100 person 3 shelf with meds, without meds and the 91340; 150 person 4 shelf, the 91341 and 91342 at 5 shelves; and 200 person 5 shelf with meds and the 249-O/P 200 person cabinet with liner. Also a 6155 industrial cabinet for 100 people, a 6175 OSHA station for 150 and a plain first aid cabinet.

With meds or without

Many cabinets come in both versions, and the choice is a policy one. Some employers stock oral medications such as pain relief or antacids; others deliberately do not, because dispensing medication introduces questions about allergies, interactions and who is authorised to hand it out. Neither approach is universally correct, and the decision belongs with the employer's health and safety policy rather than the cabinet catalogue.

The Restocking Problem

The most common failure in workplace first aid is not the wrong cabinet, it is a cabinet that has been picked over and never refilled. Items get taken one at a time by people who do not report it, and the cabinet passes as compliant on the wall while being empty of the things most likely to be needed.

The SmartCompliance system addresses that directly by organising contents so gaps are visible at a glance rather than requiring an inventory check. Someone opening the cabinet sees an empty slot immediately.

SmartCompliance cabinets in metal: 50 person large ANSI A with meds and without, plus ANSI B large with meds and without, and XL versions at 150 person with meds and without.

In plastic: 50 person large ANSI A with meds, without meds, 91092 with meds and 91093 without.

Food service versions

Food service cabinets swap in blue metal-detectable bandages, which exist so that a bandage lost into food is caught by the metal detector rather than reaching a customer. Options: metal with meds and without, plastic with meds and without, the 91094, and XL versions with meds and without, plus ANSI B food service with meds and without. Individual Dynarex blue metal detectable fingertip bandages are also stocked.

Refills and retrofits

The 4 shelf ANSI B refill kit with meds and the 100 person ANSI B 3 shelf refill. To upgrade an existing cabinet rather than replace it: SmartCompliance ANSI B retrofit grids for 50 person cabinets, with business refill and food service refill.

Bleeding Control: A Separate Category

Bleeding control equipment is not scaled-up first aid. It addresses life-threatening haemorrhage, where the intervention window is minutes and the items required are tourniquets, hemostatic gauze and pressure dressings rather than plasters and antiseptic.

These cabinets are placed like fire extinguishers or AEDs: in public areas, visible, signed and unlocked or alarmed, because the person who needs to open one may not be a trained first aider and will not have time to find a key. Some are alarmed so that opening is noticed and the kit is restocked afterwards.

California's AB2260 sets requirements for bleeding control kits in certain buildings, and several products here reference compliance with it. Whether that or any similar requirement applies to a given building depends on the jurisdiction, building type and occupancy, and should be confirmed with the relevant authority rather than assumed from a product description.

Options: the AB2260 compliant cabinet with 6 kits, the version with alarm, the alarm and tote version and the multiple victim tote version.

Empty cabinets for existing kits: large without alarm and with alarm. Smaller wall units: the SmartCompliance cabinet for limb and torso wounds and the version covering chest wounds.

Portable and consumable: the multiple victim throw bag, 60 pieces, hemostatic gauze pads in 4 x 4, 10 pack and a Dynarex latex-free tourniquet. Bleeding control equipment is only effective with training, and placing kits without training programmes is a common gap.

Responder Bags and Trauma Kits

A responder bag goes to the casualty rather than the casualty coming to a cabinet, which changes what it has to be: portable, organised for finding things under pressure, and stocked for the incidents that actually occur in that setting.

By size: the 3100 small 102-piece kit, the 3300 91-piece backpack, the 3500 151-piece fabric case, the 520-FR large 158-piece bag, the 91110 deluxe 172-piece, the 91146 enhanced 168-piece, the 90649 extra large duffle, the FA-504 269-piece and the 91170 emergency response bag, 224 pieces.

Capability tiers

The 913xx series steps up by capability rather than only by piece count, which is the more useful way to compare: the 91390 standard at 329 pieces, the 91391 adding bleed control, the 91392 adding airway management and the 91393 with bleed control, airway and bloodborne pathogen protection.

Capability should match training. A bag containing airway equipment nobody on site is trained to use adds weight and cost without adding response capacity, and can create a false sense of readiness.

Tactical and specialist

The 91265 trauma backpack, 200 pieces, the FA138 tactical trauma backpack, the FA138XX advanced with bleeding control and the FA140XX STOMP bag in multiple colours.

Setting-specific: the 720019 extreme sports kit, 390 pieces, the 9000 all-terrain kit, the FA-462 deluxe survival kit and the 712005 pediatric 3 shelf station for schools and childcare.

Bloodborne pathogen provision

The SmartCompliance bloodborne pathogen station cabinet, the 700-BBP spill clean-up cabinet, 78 pieces and the 90700 75 person ANSI A kit with BBP pack. Whoever treats an injury is exposed to whatever the casualty is carrying, so BBP provision protects the responder as much as it controls contamination.

Evacuation Chairs

Lifts are taken out of service during a fire alarm, which leaves anyone who cannot use stairs waiting in a refuge area for the fire service. An evacuation chair lets them be brought down by trained staff instead.

The mechanism is a tracked or braked descent system that controls speed down the stairs, so the operator guides rather than carries. That is what makes it possible for one or two people to evacuate someone considerably heavier than themselves without the uncontrolled descent that manual carrying risks.

Evac+Chair options by capacity: the 300H, 400H, 500H, 600H evacuation wheelchair and 750H.

Powered stair climbers, which also go up: the Power 800 battery powered and the Power 900 4-speed electric.

An evacuation chair is only useful with trained operators and a plan that identifies who needs one and who will operate it. A chair mounted on a landing with nobody trained to use it is signage rather than capability.

Burns, Rescue Tools and Preparedness

Burns

The Water-Jel 36 x 30 Heat Shield burn blanket and the 72 x 60 fire extinguishing blanket, plus the Dynarex XeroBurn sterile burn dressing blanket. A gel blanket does two jobs at once: it smothers flame and it cools the burn, which is why it sits in an emergency response kit rather than a dressing cupboard.

Rescue tools

Vehicle extrication and eye injury items: the Code Blue seatbelt cutter, compact, the plus size version, the window punch and the eye magnet with loop.

Splinting and emergency kits: Dynarex ActiSplint splints, the ActiSplint with Sensi-Wrap roll, the 3193 compressed bandage, the DynaSafety overdose emergency kit case and the allergy emergency kit case. Oxygen: the M24/M15 oxygen E and D cylinder toggle post valve tank. Hazard marking: a Spill Magic yellow 4-sided pylon cone.

Emergency preparedness

Multi-day kits for the period before outside help arrives: the American Red Cross deluxe 3-day backpack, the 4-person 3-day backpack, the 24-person preparedness bag kit, the 2-person wildfire backpack and the shelter-in-place backpack.

Outdoor and site protection: BugX DEET-free insect repellent wipes, SunX30 SPF30 lotion packets, the lotion and wipe combo pack and SPF30 lotion in 1 gallon with aloe and vitamin E. Also the LabChoice flex cap in 13mm.

Defibrillators

ZOLL AEDs and professional defibrillators are carried in this collection and covered in detail in AED & Resuscitation: the AED Plus, the AED Plus fully automatic, the AED 3, the Powerheart G5, the AED Pro and the R Series BLS, with the AED Plus Trainer II and battery systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ANSI Class A and Class B?

The ANSI standard defines two classes by contents and quantity: Class A for lower-risk environments such as typical offices, and Class B with a larger and broader inventory for higher-risk work environments. Which applies depends on a hazard assessment of the specific workplace rather than headcount alone, and the binding requirements come from the applicable regulations for that jurisdiction and industry.

How do I choose cabinet size by headcount?

Cabinets are rated by the number of people they are intended to serve, from 50 to 200, with shelf count rising accordingly. Headcount rating and ANSI class are separate variables: a 100-person Class B cabinet holds more than a 100-person Class A. Size to the actual population on site including contractors and visitors, not just permanent staff.

Should a cabinet include medications?

That is a policy decision. Some employers stock oral medications such as pain relief; others deliberately do not, because dispensing introduces questions about allergies, interactions and who is authorised to hand it out. Neither is universally correct, and the decision belongs with the employer's health and safety policy. Most cabinets are available in both versions.

What is the most common first aid compliance failure?

A cabinet that has been picked over and never refilled. Items get taken one at a time by people who do not report it, and the cabinet passes as compliant on the wall while being empty of the things most likely to be needed. Systems that make gaps visible at a glance address this better than scheduled inventory checks, which happen too infrequently.

Why do food service cabinets use blue bandages?

Blue is a colour that does not occur naturally in most food, so a bandage that comes off is visible. Metal-detectable versions go further: a bandage lost into food is caught by the metal detector rather than reaching a customer. That is why food service cabinets are a distinct product rather than a standard cabinet with a different label.

How is bleeding control equipment different from first aid?

It addresses life-threatening haemorrhage, where the intervention window is minutes and the items required are tourniquets, hemostatic gauze and pressure dressings rather than plasters and antiseptic. It is not scaled-up first aid. The cabinets are placed like fire extinguishers or AEDs: public, visible, signed and unlocked or alarmed, because whoever opens one may not be a trained first aider.

What is AB2260?

California legislation setting requirements for bleeding control kits in certain buildings, and several cabinets reference compliance with it. Whether that or any similar requirement applies to a given building depends on jurisdiction, building type and occupancy, and should be confirmed with the relevant authority rather than assumed from a product description.

How should I choose a responder bag?

By capability rather than piece count. Bags step up through standard, plus bleed control, plus airway management, and plus bloodborne pathogen protection, and each tier is a different response capacity. Capability should match training: a bag containing airway equipment nobody on site is trained to use adds weight and cost without adding response capacity, and can create a false sense of readiness.

Why does a building need an evacuation chair?

Because lifts are taken out of service during a fire alarm, leaving anyone who cannot use stairs waiting in a refuge area for the fire service. An evacuation chair lets trained staff bring them down instead. Its tracked or braked descent controls speed so the operator guides rather than carries, which is what allows one or two people to evacuate someone considerably heavier than themselves.

Is equipment enough, or is training needed?

Training is the part that turns equipment into capability. A bleeding control cabinet with nobody trained to apply a tourniquet, or an evacuation chair mounted on a landing with nobody trained to operate it, is signage rather than a response. Equipment purchases in this category should be planned alongside who will be trained and how that training is refreshed.
