Gowns & Caps

Isolation Smocks and the Hardware That Organises Donning

This collection covers body and head coverings together with the holders, dispensers and wall organizers that keep them in the right place at the point of donning. It carries the Dynarex isolation smock and blanket set alongside bouffant cap holders, shoe cover dispensers and a combined isolation gown and mask organizer.

The weight given to organisation hardware here follows from how PPE actually fails in practice. Donning has an order, and the order exists for a reason: each item is put on so that it does not disturb what came before or contaminate what comes after. When gowns are in one cupboard, caps in a drawer and shoe covers in a box on the floor, staff don in whatever order they collected the items. The sequence is lost not because anyone decided to skip it but because the room was laid out that way.

Isolation Smocks and Gowns

An isolation gown is a barrier covering the torso and arms, worn to keep contamination off clothing and skin during patient contact where transmission risk is elevated. The Dynarex isolation smock and blanket set in black, five per case is the garment stocked here.

Two practical points about gowns that are easy to get wrong. First, coverage: a gown that does not close properly at the back or reach the wrists leaves gaps exactly where a clinician leans over a patient. Second, doffing: the gown is removed before leaving the room, turned inward as it comes off so the contaminated outer surface ends up inside the bundle. That means a waste receptacle has to be inside the room, not down the corridor, or the sequence breaks at the last step.

Head and Foot Covering Dispensers

Bouffant caps and shoe covers are high-turnover items, and their dispensing hardware determines whether they are actually used. A box of caps on a shelf across the room is a box of caps that gets skipped when someone is in a hurry.

Bouffant caps

The bouffant cap holder mounts a box at the point of donning. The visual management bouffant cap holder for two boxes holds two sizes or two types side by side, which is what a department needs when it stocks more than one and staff should not have to guess which box holds which.

Shoe covers

Shoe covers are the awkward item in any donning sequence, because putting them on requires balancing on one foot near an entrance. A dispenser positioned within reach makes that manageable; a box on the floor does not. Options: the shoe cover dispenser, the shoe cover holder and the two-position visual management shoe cover holder for departments stocking two types.

Why visual management versions exist

Visual management holders keep the box label visible and separate different items into fixed positions. The point is that people take what is easy to reach, so if two boxes look alike and sit together, the wrong one gets taken regularly. Fixed positions with visible labels remove that. It is the same principle as colour-coding gloves, applied to a shelf.

Combined Donning Organizers

The isolation gown and mask wall organizer puts the two items that are donned in sequence into one unit at the point where they are needed.

For an isolation room anteroom, this is the difference between a defined donning station and a collection of boxes. A single organizer holding what the protocol requires, mounted at the entrance, makes the correct sequence the path of least effort. For a fuller set including respirator, gloves, eye protection and sanitizer, see the wall-mount PPE station in Masks & Face Protection.

One point worth stating: donning and doffing sequences are set by your facility's infection prevention protocol and vary with the precaution type and the setting. Hardware supports the sequence; it does not define it. Confirm the required order and the required items with your infection prevention function, then arrange the station to match it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an isolation gown used for?

It is a barrier covering the torso and arms, worn during patient contact where transmission risk is elevated, keeping contamination off the wearer's clothing and skin. When a gown is required, and which type, is set by your facility's precaution protocol for the specific situation rather than by general preference.

Why does donning order matter?

Because each item is put on so that it does not disturb what came before or contaminate what comes after. Putting a gown on after gloves, for example, means handling the gown with gloved hands and then having gloves that sit under the cuffs rather than over them. The order is set by your infection prevention protocol, and the practical reason a sequence gets skipped is usually that the items are stored in four different places.

Why does doffing need a waste receptacle inside the room?

Because the gown is removed before leaving, turned inward so the contaminated outer surface ends up inside the bundle. If the bin is down the corridor, the bundle travels through clean space, which defeats the purpose. A receptacle positioned where doffing happens is what allows the last step of the sequence to be completed correctly.

What should I check on gown coverage?

That it closes properly at the back and reaches the wrists. Gaps at the back and short sleeves leave exposure exactly where a clinician leans over a patient and reaches forward. Sizing matters here more than comfort: a gown too small for the wearer opens at the back during the movements the gown was meant to protect against.

Why use a bouffant cap holder rather than leaving the box out?

Because a box on a shelf across the room gets skipped when someone is in a hurry, and a box lying open on a surface collects whatever is airborne in that space. A wall-mounted holder puts the caps at the point of donning and keeps the box off the work surface. Two-box versions let a department stock two sizes or types with each in a fixed, labelled position.

What is visual management in PPE storage?

Keeping labels visible and giving each item a fixed position so people can identify what they are taking without reading a box or guessing. People take what is easy to reach, so two similar boxes sitting together produce regular wrong selections. Fixed labelled positions remove that. It is the same principle as colour-coding gloves, applied to a shelf or wall.

Why do shoe covers need a dispenser?

Because putting them on means balancing on one foot near an entrance, usually while holding something. A dispenser positioned within reach at the right height makes that manageable; a box on the floor requires bending, balancing and rummaging at the same time. That combination is why shoe covers get skipped more often than any other item in a donning sequence.

Where should a PPE donning station be placed?

At the point of entry to the area requiring PPE, typically an anteroom or immediately outside the room, so donning happens before entry rather than partway through it. Doffing provision goes at the exit point with waste disposal at hand. Your infection prevention function should confirm the placement and contents against the precaution type in use.

Does a wall organizer replace the protocol?

No. Donning and doffing sequences are set by your facility's infection prevention protocol and vary with precaution type and setting. Hardware supports the sequence by making the correct order the easiest one to follow; it does not define what the order should be. Confirm the required items and order first, then arrange the station to match.

How much stock should a donning station hold?

Enough that it does not run out between restocking rounds, because an empty station sends someone to a supply cupboard mid-sequence, which is exactly the situation the station was meant to prevent. Two-box holders help by doubling capacity for high-turnover items without doubling the wall space. Set restocking frequency against actual consumption rather than assuming.
