Respirators (N95)

NIOSH Certified N95 Respirators and Secure Dispensing

An N95 respirator is a tight-fitting device that filters at least 95% of airborne particles and, unlike a mask, only performs as rated when it forms a seal against the wearer's face. This collection carries NIOSH-certified respirators from Dynarex and Medivena Benehal, alongside dedicated N95 dispensers and PPE stations.

Everything that matters about an N95 follows from that word: seal. A respirator with an excellent filter and a poor seal delivers protection closer to a loose mask than to its rated figure, because air takes the path of least resistance and unfiltered air around the edge is easier than filtered air through the media. That is why respirator use in healthcare is administered as a programme rather than as a purchase.

What NIOSH Certification Covers

NIOSH approval means the respirator has been tested against a defined standard for filtration efficiency, breathing resistance and construction, under the United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health respirator approval programme. The N in N95 indicates it is not resistant to oil-based aerosols; the 95 is the minimum filtration efficiency against the test particle.

What certification does not cover is fit. It is a property of the device, tested on a machine, and it says nothing about how the device performs on a particular face. That gap between certified performance and delivered protection is what fit testing exists to close.

Surgical N95 versus standard N95

A surgical N95 meets the respirator standard and additionally passes fluid resistance testing, so it protects against both airborne particles and splash. Standard N95s are respiratory protection only. Procedures that generate aerosol and spray at the same time call for the surgical version, and that determination belongs in your procedure protocol rather than being made at the supply cupboard.

In stock: the Dynarex N95 particulate respirator for respiratory protection, and the Medivena Benehal NIOSH-certified surgical N95 respirator in a foldable cup design, supplied 20 per box and 20 boxes per case.

Why foldable cup design matters

A foldable respirator ships and stores flat, then opens into a cup shape that holds its form against the face. That combination solves two problems at once: pre-formed cup respirators take up considerable storage volume, while flat-fold designs that do not hold their shape collapse against the mouth in use. A foldable cup design gives the storage efficiency of one and the working shape of the other.

Fit Testing and the Seal

Where respirators are worn as part of an occupational respiratory protection programme, fit testing is generally required alongside medical evaluation and training, with the specifics set by workplace regulation and your facility's written programme.

Fit testing establishes that a specific make, model and size seals adequately on a specific person. It is not transferable: passing on one model does not mean passing on another, which is why substituting a different respirator brand during a supply shortage is a programme question rather than a purchasing one.

Facial hair

Hair crossing the seal line prevents the respirator sealing, and no amount of tightening compensates. This is the most common single reason a fit test fails, and it is not a matter of grooming preference but of physics: the strap pulls the respirator against hair rather than skin, and air passes through the gap. Facilities running respiratory protection programmes address this in policy, and the policy has to be settled before the equipment matters.

Seal check before every use

A user seal check is a quick check performed each time the respirator is donned, distinct from the formal fit test done periodically. It confirms the respirator is positioned correctly on this occasion. Fit testing establishes that the model can seal on this person; the seal check confirms it has sealed this time. Both are needed, and skipping the daily one is the more common failure.

N95 Dispensing and Storage

A respirator that has been sitting in an open box collecting ambient dust is a poor starting point for a device meant to filter what someone breathes. Dedicated N95 dispensers keep respirators enclosed, clean and dispensed one at a time.

Complete donning stations

The wall-mount PPE station holding N95, earloop masks, wipes, gloves, goggles and hand sanitizer puts a full donning set in one place. Donning sequence matters, and a set assembled from four locations tends to be donned in whatever order the items were collected.

Entrance and Facility Stations

This collection also carries the respiratory hygiene station range, which places masks, tissues, sanitizer and waste disposal at entrances where source control actually works. Wall-mounted: station H, station I, station Q, station S, station U and the U with tub, wipe, mask and tissue.

On acrylic stands where wall mounting is not an option: H, I and Q. For high-traffic entrances, the 4 or 5 position station and the Deco kiosk with sign sleeve.

Secured versions for public-facing areas: the locking station S and the theft-deterrent locking station G. With signage and touch-free provision: the station with sleeve sign and the station with touch-free mounting space.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does N95 actually mean?

The N indicates the respirator is not resistant to oil-based aerosols, and the 95 is the minimum percentage of airborne particles it filters under the NIOSH test. Together they describe a class of filtering facepiece respirator approved under the United States respirator approval programme. The rating describes the filter media and the device construction, not how the device performs on any particular face.

What is the difference between a surgical N95 and a standard N95?

A surgical N95 meets the respirator standard and additionally passes fluid resistance testing, protecting against both airborne particles and splash. A standard N95 provides respiratory protection only. Procedures generating aerosol and spray simultaneously call for the surgical version, and that determination belongs in your procedure protocol rather than being decided at the supply cupboard.

Why does an N95 need fit testing?

Because certification tests the device, not the fit on a person. A respirator with an excellent filter and a poor seal delivers protection much closer to a loose mask, since air takes the easier path around the edge rather than through the filter media. Fit testing establishes that a specific make, model and size seals adequately on a specific individual, and it is required in most occupational respiratory protection programmes alongside medical evaluation and training.

Does fit testing transfer between respirator models?

No. Passing a fit test on one make, model and size does not establish fit on another, because face seal geometry differs between designs. This matters practically during supply shortages: substituting a different brand is a respiratory protection programme question requiring retesting, not a straightforward purchasing swap. Confirm with whoever administers your programme before changing models.

Why does facial hair prevent an N95 from sealing?

Hair crossing the seal line holds the respirator off the skin, and air passes through the resulting gap rather than through the filter. Tightening the straps does not close it; it pulls the respirator harder against hair. This is the most common single cause of fit test failure. Facilities running respiratory protection programmes address it in written policy, and that policy needs settling before equipment selection matters.

What is a user seal check and how is it different from a fit test?

A user seal check is a quick check performed every time the respirator is put on, confirming it is positioned correctly on that occasion. A fit test is a formal periodic assessment establishing that the model can seal on that person at all. Both are needed and they answer different questions. Skipping the daily seal check is the more common failure, since the formal test is scheduled and the daily one depends on the individual.

Why choose a foldable cup design?

It ships and stores flat, then opens into a cup that holds its shape against the face. Pre-formed cup respirators take considerable storage volume, while flat designs that do not hold shape collapse against the mouth in use, which is uncomfortable and affects breathing resistance. A foldable cup design gives the storage efficiency of one and the working shape of the other.

How long can an N95 be worn?

Wear time and reuse limits are set by your facility's respiratory protection programme and by the situation, and they take account of contamination, damage, breathing resistance and whether the seal is still achievable. A respirator that is soiled, damaged, wet or no longer passing a seal check should be replaced regardless of how long it has been worn. Follow your written programme rather than a general figure.

What is the difference between N95 and KN95?

They are approvals under different national standards: N95 under the United States NIOSH programme, KN95 under a Chinese standard. Filtration requirements are broadly comparable but the testing, approval and quality assurance frameworks differ. Where your programme or regulator specifies NIOSH approval, a KN95 does not satisfy it. Check what your facility's programme requires before substituting.

Why use a dedicated N95 dispenser?

To keep respirators enclosed and clean until use, and to dispense them one at a time. A respirator sitting in an open box in a corridor collects ambient dust and whatever else is airborne there, which is a poor starting point for a filtering device. Dust-proof dispensers enclose the stock, and locking versions keep it available in public-facing areas without it disappearing in quantity.
