Front Wheeled Walkers

What a Front Wheeled Walker Is

A front wheeled walker is a folding aluminum frame with two swivel or fixed wheels on the front legs and rubber tips or glide caps on the back legs. You lift it slightly less than a standard walker, roll it forward on the front wheels, then step into the frame. The rear tips stay on the floor and act as a brake, so the walker does not run away from you the way a four wheel rollator can.

Clinicians often call this a two wheel walker. It sits between a standard pickup walker, which has no wheels at all, and a rollator, which has four wheels, hand brakes and a seat. If you need steady support but find lifting a full walker tiring, this is usually the right middle step.

Front Wheeled vs Standard vs Rollator

These three are not interchangeable. The table shows what changes between them so you can match the device to how much support you actually need.

Front Wheeled Walker Standard Walker 4 Wheel Rollator
Wheels 2 front wheels, rear tips or glides None, 4 rubber tips 4 wheels
How you move it Roll forward, rear tips drag Lift and place Push continuously
Weight bearing High, frame does not roll away Highest Lower, rolls under load
Hand brakes No No Yes
Seat No No Yes
Best indoors on carpet Good Good Fair
Best for long outdoor walks Fair Poor Best
Typical user need Needs support but tires when lifting Needs maximum stability Needs rest stops on longer walks

If you are unsure between these, browse Standard Walkers and 4 Wheel Rollators and compare them against this page.

Wheel Size and Rear Glides

Most front wheeled walkers in this collection use 5 inch wheels. Five inch wheels clear door thresholds, carpet edges and small bumps while keeping the frame low and stable. Smaller 3 inch wheels turn more tightly indoors but catch on thresholds. Larger wheels roll better outdoors but raise the front of the frame and reduce the braking effect of the rear tips.

The rear legs matter as much as the wheels. Rubber tips grip hard floors and give the most braking. Plastic glide caps slide more easily over carpet and need less effort, but they brake less. Some models ship with both so you can swap depending on your floors. Replacement tips and glides are in Walker Accessories.

Dual Release and Two Button Release Frames

Folding mechanism is the feature buyers ask about most. Dual release walkers have a paddle or trigger on each side, so one side of the frame can fold while the other stays rigid. That lets the walker flex as you walk, which some users find smoother through doorways. Two button release walkers have a push button on each upright and fold flat in one motion for the car or a closet.

Neither is better in general. Dual release suits users with weaker hands, because a paddle takes a push rather than a pinch. Two button release suits anyone who folds the walker daily and wants it to pack flat.

Height and Weight Capacity

Handle height is adjustable on every model here, typically in one inch steps. The standard fitting rule is that with your arms hanging relaxed at your sides, the handgrip should sit at your wrist crease. That puts a slight bend in the elbow when you hold the walker, which is where your arms can actually take load.

Weight capacity on adult front wheeled walkers in this collection runs from 300 lb to 500 lb. Buy for actual user weight plus anything carried, and leave margin. If you need 400 lb or more, or a wider frame opening, see Bariatric Walkers, where several models are also front wheeled.

Who This Walker Suits

Front wheeled walkers are commonly used after hip or knee replacement, during recovery from a fall, with early stage Parkinson's, with general lower limb weakness, and by anyone whose shoulders or wrists cannot repeatedly lift a standard walker. They are a poor fit if you cannot control the frame on a slope, because there are no hand brakes, or if you need to sit down regularly, because there is no seat.

If you are recovering from a single leg injury and need to keep all weight off that leg, a knee walker is usually easier than any walker. Those are in Knee Walkers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a front wheeled walker the same as a two wheel walker?

Yes. Front wheeled walker, two wheel walker and walker with wheels all describe the same device: a folding frame with two wheels on the front legs and tips or glides on the back.

Do front wheeled walkers have brakes?

No. They do not need hand brakes because the rear tips rest on the floor and stop the frame from rolling when you put weight on it. If you want hand brakes, you need a rollator.

Can I use one outdoors?

On flat pavement, yes, for short distances. The rear tips drag on rough ground and the 5 inch wheels do not absorb much, so longer outdoor walks are easier with a four wheel rollator.

What is the difference between dual release and two button release?

Dual release has a paddle on each side and lets one side fold while you walk. Two button release has a push button on each upright and folds the whole frame flat. Dual release is easier for weak hands, two button release packs smaller.

How do I set the right handle height?

Stand inside the frame in your normal shoes with your arms relaxed at your sides. Adjust the legs until the handgrips are level with the crease of your wrist. Your elbows should bend about 15 to 20 degrees when you hold on.

Which rear attachment should I use, tips or glides?

Use rubber tips on tile, wood and vinyl for maximum grip and braking. Use glide caps on carpet if lifting and dragging the rear legs feels like hard work. Replace tips when the tread wears smooth.

Will it fit through a standard doorway?

Most adult front wheeled walkers are 22 to 26 inches wide at the base and clear a standard 30 inch interior door. Bariatric widths can reach 30 inches or more, so measure your narrowest doorway before ordering a wide frame.

Can a front wheeled walker take a seat or a basket?

It cannot take a seat, because the frame is not braced for sitting. It can take a walker bag, basket, tray or cup holder. Those are in Walker Accessories.

Does Medicare cover a front wheeled walker?

Walkers are generally covered as durable medical equipment when a physician documents medical need, but coverage, supplier rules and your share of cost depend on your plan. We are not able to bill your insurance for you. Check with your plan and your physician before you order, and keep the invoice for reimbursement.

How much does a front wheeled walker weigh?

Aluminum adult models in this collection weigh roughly 6 to 8 lb. Bariatric frames with heavier tubing run higher. Check the specification table on each product page for the exact figure.
