Assist Handles, Half and Full Length Rails, and Gap Fillers
This collection carries 19 bed rails and accessories from Drive Medical, Invacare, Clarke Healthcare, ProActive Medical, Dynarex and Skil-Care: home assist handles for getting in and out of bed, half and full length side rails, rotating long term care rails, bariatric models for beds to 48 x 54 inches, and the gap fillers and bumper pads that close entrapment spaces on existing rails.
Whether a barrier rail is appropriate for a particular person is a clinical assessment made by the care team. This page covers which product fits which situation once that decision has been made.

Assist Handle or Barrier Rail?
An assist handle gives leverage to someone who moves independently but needs something to push up from. A barrier rail restrains movement at the mattress edge and is used only where the care team has assessed it as appropriate. For independent users: the M-Rail with pouch, the SafetyGrip, the HSG470W handgrip rail and the Invacare 6632 coated steel assist rails. Where the user needs to turn and stand in one movement, a rotating rail such as the ArcoRail or the Drive LTC Deluxe pair follows the movement without a hand change.
Half Length or Full Length?
A half length rail covers the upper bed edge and leaves the lower section open, so a person who can exit unaided still can. A full length rail closes the side and is specified only where a full-edge barrier is clinically indicated. Half length: the Drive 15021BV T-style, the 15201BV no-gap pair and the Invacare 6630DS clamp-on. Full length: the Drive 15001ABV telescoping. For facility beds, rails are ordered to deck width: 39 inch or 42 inch. If the bed has been lengthened with the Delta extension kit, recheck rail and mattress fit afterwards.
Which Accessory Closes Which Gap?
The space between rail and mattress is closed by a filler: the Protekt Rail Guard, the wedge-shaped Protekt Wedge, or the full-length Skil-Care 70 inch vinyl wedge pad. Impact against the rail itself is a separate problem, addressed by Drive M3800 foam bumper pads. For wide beds, standard rails leave end gaps, so use bariatric sizing: the Invacare BAR6640P or the Dynarex Bari-Max for 48 x 54. See Bariatric Mattresses for matching support surfaces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which bed rail for someone who can get out of bed alone but needs support?
An assist handle rather than a barrier rail. The M-Rail, SafetyGrip and Invacare 6632 give something to push up from without enclosing the bed edge. Where turning and standing happen in one movement, a rotating rail such as the ArcoRail follows the motion.
Which rail size for a facility bed?
Measure the deck width and order to it. Invacare assist rail assemblies come in 39 and 42 inch deck sizes. A rail sized to the wrong deck leaves a gap at the mounting point.
Does a standard rail fit a bariatric bed?
No. A standard-width rail on a wide bed leaves gaps at the ends. Use a bariatric rail sized to the bed: the Invacare BAR6640P or the Dynarex Bari-Max for 48 x 54 inch beds.
Gap filler or bumper pad?
They solve different problems. A gap filler closes the space between rail and mattress; a bumper pad covers the rail surface against impact. Neither substitutes for the other, and a bed may need both.
Do I need to recheck the rail after changing the mattress?
Yes. A new or worn mattress changes the rail-to-mattress gap, so fit is rechecked against the care team's assessment whenever the mattress or bed changes.
