Dental Hand Instruments

Endodontic Forceps, Implant Instruments and Handpiece Systems

This collection carries Laschal Surgical endodontic and implant hand instruments alongside Flight Dental motors, heads and maintenance systems. The Laschal range covers file forceps and Steiglitz patterns from 14.25 to 16.2 cm, and the Flight range covers electric and air motors, contra angle heads and automatic handpiece lubrication.

What links the two halves is that both are about control in a confined space. An endodontic forceps grips something a few millimetres long inside a canal that cannot be seen directly. A motor delivers torque to a file inside that same canal without exceeding what the file will tolerate. Both fail in the same way, and the failure has the same name: a separated instrument.

→ Part of Instruments & Handpieces. Also see Dental Surgical Instruments, Sterilization & Infection Control and All Dental.

Steiglitz Forceps: Retrieving What Should Not Be There

Steiglitz forceps have narrow angled beaks designed to reach into the coronal portion of a canal and grip a fragment: a separated file, a silver point, a broken instrument.

That task is harder than it sounds and explains the whole design. The object is small, it sits inside a canal with limited access, and it can usually only be gripped at its most coronal end. The beaks have to be narrow enough to enter the space, angled enough to approach from the operator's line of sight, and strong enough that the grip holds during withdrawal rather than letting the fragment slip back further down the canal.

The angle designations reflect approach geometry: the 90SL-M universal Steiglitz at 14.25 cm, the 90SPL-M at 14.5 cm, the 75SL-M micro Steiglitz at 14.5 cm and the 75SPL-M micro Steiglitz at 15 cm.

Micro or universal?

Micro patterns have finer beaks for narrow canals and smaller fragments, where a universal pattern simply cannot enter. Universal patterns grip more securely on anything they can reach. In practice a practice doing retrieval work stocks both, because the choice is dictated by the canal rather than by preference, and discovering mid-procedure that the available instrument does not fit is not a useful position to be in.

Endo File Forceps

File forceps handle and place endodontic files, which are thin, springy and easy to drop. The 75CHF-L universal endo file forceps at 15 cm and the 90AHF-L at 15.75 cm.

The reason a dedicated instrument exists rather than using general tweezers is grip security over a small round cross-section. A file that rotates or slips in the beaks during placement is a file that ends up somewhere other than the canal opening, and in the oral cavity a dropped file is an aspiration and ingestion risk as well as a contamination one.

Implant instruments

The IP-1 implant packer, flat, at 16.2 cm is used to pack graft material into a site. A flat working end distributes force across the material rather than concentrating it at a point, which is what allows even compaction without displacing the surrounding tissue.

Electric Endo Motors and Torque Control

The Flight EM-9001 and EMB-9002 LED endo motor systems with 3.4 Ncm torque provide controlled rotation for endodontic file work.

Torque control is the specification that matters, and the reason is the failure it prevents. An endodontic file binding in a canal will separate if the motor keeps applying torque past what the file can withstand, and a separated file inside a canal is a serious complication requiring retrieval or, if retrieval fails, altering the treatment plan entirely.

A motor with a torque limit stops or reverses when resistance exceeds the set value, before the file reaches its breaking point. That is a mechanical safeguard against a problem that hand feel alone cannot reliably prevent, because the forces involved are below the threshold at which an operator notices resistance changing.

The relationship between the two halves of this collection is therefore direct: the motors reduce the frequency of separated instruments, and the Steiglitz forceps handle the ones that happen anyway.

Air motors and heads

The Flight F-424BM air motor with 1:1 drive at 20,000 rpm and external water spray. Water spray is not optional on a cutting handpiece: friction at the bur generates heat, and heat transmitted to the pulp causes irreversible damage, so coolant is a tissue protection requirement rather than a debris-clearing convenience.

The F-DE41 and F-DE41PS 4:1 contra angle latch head in stainless steel provides speed reduction: a 4:1 head turns the bur at a quarter of motor speed while increasing torque proportionally, which is the combination low-speed procedures require.

Handpiece Maintenance

Handpiece bearings run at high speed and fail when they are under-lubricated, over-lubricated, or lubricated inconsistently. The Flight HPL-3001 and HPL-3002 automatic handpiece maintenance systems address all three.

The economic case is straightforward once the numbers are laid out. Handpieces are expensive and their bearings are the part that wears out, while lubrication is cheap and takes seconds. A practice replacing handpieces every couple of years frequently has a maintenance problem rather than a quality problem, and it is rarely diagnosed as such because the failure looks like ordinary wear.

Automatic systems matter specifically because of consistency. Manual lubrication depends on whoever is doing it applying the right amount to the right port for the right duration, and in a busy practice at the end of a session it is exactly the task that gets rushed. An automatic unit applies the same amount the same way every time, which removes the variable that actually causes bearing failure.

Lubrication also has to be sequenced correctly with sterilization, since handpieces are reprocessed between patients. See Sterilization & Infection Control and Autoclaves & Steam Sterilizers for the reprocessing side, and follow the handpiece manufacturer's instructions for the order of lubrication and autoclaving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Steiglitz forceps used for?

Retrieving fragments from the coronal portion of a canal: a separated file, a silver point, a broken instrument. The narrow angled beaks are designed to enter a confined space, approach from the operator's line of sight, and hold the grip during withdrawal rather than letting the fragment slip further down the canal.

Should I stock micro or universal Steiglitz forceps?

A practice doing retrieval work generally stocks both. Micro patterns have finer beaks for narrow canals and smaller fragments where a universal pattern cannot enter; universal patterns grip more securely on anything they can reach. The canal dictates the choice rather than preference, and discovering mid-procedure that the available instrument does not fit is not a useful position.

Why use dedicated file forceps rather than general tweezers?

Grip security over a small round cross-section. Endodontic files are thin and springy, and a file that rotates or slips in the beaks during placement ends up somewhere other than the canal opening. In the oral cavity a dropped file is an aspiration and ingestion risk as well as a contamination problem, so grip reliability is a safety specification.

Why does an endo motor need torque control?

Because an endodontic file binding in a canal will separate if the motor keeps applying torque past what the file withstands, and a separated file inside a canal is a serious complication requiring retrieval or a change of treatment plan. A torque-limited motor stops or reverses before the breaking point, which hand feel alone cannot reliably achieve since the forces are below the threshold at which resistance is noticed.

What does a 4:1 contra angle head do?

It reduces speed and increases torque proportionally, turning the bur at a quarter of motor speed. That combination is what low-speed procedures require: high torque at controlled speed rather than high speed at low torque. The reduction ratio is therefore a functional specification rather than a preference, matched to the procedure being performed.

Why does a cutting handpiece need water spray?

Friction at the bur generates heat, and heat transmitted to the pulp causes irreversible damage. Coolant is therefore a tissue protection requirement rather than a convenience for clearing debris. A handpiece run without adequate spray, or with blocked spray ports, is generating heat with nothing removing it.

Why do dental handpieces fail?

Most often the bearings, which run at high speed and fail when lubrication is inadequate, excessive or inconsistent. Practices replacing handpieces every couple of years frequently have a maintenance problem rather than a quality problem, and it is rarely diagnosed as such because the failure looks like ordinary wear.

Is an automatic handpiece maintenance system worth the cost?

The case rests on consistency rather than convenience. Manual lubrication depends on whoever is doing it applying the right amount to the right port for the right duration, and at the end of a busy session that is exactly the task that gets rushed. An automatic unit applies the same amount the same way every time, removing the variable that causes bearing failure. Against handpiece replacement cost, the arithmetic usually favours the unit.

When should a handpiece be lubricated relative to sterilization?

That sequence is specified by the handpiece manufacturer and varies between models, so it should be taken from the instructions for use rather than from general practice. Getting the order wrong is a common cause of both inadequate lubrication and lubricant contamination of the sterilizer, and the manufacturer's instruction is the authority on which comes first.

What does an implant packer do?

It packs graft material into a site. The flat working end distributes force across the material rather than concentrating it at a point, which allows even compaction without displacing the surrounding tissue. Working length matters for access: at 16.2 cm the instrument reaches posterior sites without the operator's hand obstructing the field.
