Flammable Storage

Spark-Free Interior Cabinets for Solvents and Flammable Reagents

A flammable material storage refrigerator has a spark-free interior: no interior light switch, no exposed thermostat contacts, no defrost heater and no fan motor inside the storage compartment, so vapour that accumulates in the cabinet cannot be ignited. This collection carries 39 refrigerators, freezers and combination units from 4 to 30 cu ft, from VWR, So-Low, American BioTech Supply, CorePoint Scientific, Liebherr and Thermo Scientific.

The reason this category exists is specific and it is worth stating plainly. A domestic or standard laboratory refrigerator contains several ignition sources inside the box: the light switch that clicks when the door opens, the thermostat contacts, the defrost heater and the evaporator fan motor. Flammable solvent vapour is heavier than air, so it pools in the bottom of a sealed cabinet and builds concentration over time. Put those two facts together and you have the mechanism behind a long history of laboratory refrigerator explosions.

Storing flammables in a domestic refrigerator is not a corner cut. It is the specific failure mode that flammable storage units were designed to eliminate, and it is a documented finding in laboratory safety inspections.

Flammable Storage or Explosion-Proof? They Are Not the Same

A flammable material storage refrigerator protects against ignition of vapour inside the cabinet. An explosion-proof refrigerator is additionally rated so that its exterior electrical components cannot ignite an explosive atmosphere in the room around it. Confusing the two is the most consequential mistake in this category, and it goes wrong in both directions.

Flammable Storage Explosion-Proof
Protects against Ignition of vapour inside the cabinet Ignition of vapour inside the cabinet and in the surrounding room
Interior Spark-free Spark-free
Exterior components Standard Rated for the classified location
Room requirement Normal, unclassified laboratory Hazardous (classified) location
Cost Moderate premium over standard Substantially higher

Most laboratories need flammable storage, not explosion-proof. Explosion-proof is required when the room itself is a classified hazardous location, meaning flammable vapour may be present in the general atmosphere, which is a facility engineering determination rather than a purchasing preference.

Buying explosion-proof when you need flammable storage wastes a lot of money. Buying flammable storage when the room is classified leaves a genuine hazard in place. If you are not certain which applies, that question belongs with your facility safety officer or environmental health and safety team before you order, not after. See Explosion-Proof Refrigeration if the room is classified.

Refrigerators, Freezers and Combination Units

Flammable storage comes in three configurations: refrigerators at roughly 1 to 10°C, freezers at -15 to -25°C, and combination units with both compartments. Capacity runs from 4 cu ft undercounter through 30 cu ft upright.

Refrigerators

The ABS range covers 17 cu ft premier and 30 cu ft premier at 2 to 10°C, with a standard-series 30 cu ft at a lower price point. VWR's range steps through 14, 17, 20 and 30 cu ft. So-Low's FMS line covers 14, 17, 20 and 30 cu ft.

Freezers

The ABS FFP-30 premier at 30 cu ft, -15 to -25°C and the FFS-30 standard. So-Low's freezer FMS line covers 14 through 30 cu ft.

Combination units

Where a lab needs both but has one footprint: the ABS FRFC10 at 9 cu ft, the VWR Plus series combo, the Thermo Scientific TSH07CFSA at 7.1 cu ft, and So-Low's 9 cu ft and 30 cu ft combos.

Undercounter and compact

For benchtop labs where a solvent fridge has to live under the bench: the ABS 5 cu ft undercounter, the VWR 5 cu ft undercounter, the Liebherr SFTfg 1501 undercounter freezer at 3.6 cu ft and the So-Low 4 cu ft undercounter freezer. Liebherr also offers SRFfg refrigerators at 12.1 and 19.7 cu ft.

Touchscreen Controllers and Data Logging

TS models add a touchscreen controller with onboard temperature logging, which matters where the stored material has stability requirements you need to evidence, not just contain safely.

Flammable storage and temperature documentation are separate requirements that often apply to the same cabinet. A reagent that must be kept flammable-safe may also have a stability specification that has to be demonstrated. Touchscreen options include the ABS FRP-30-TS TempLog refrigerator, the FFP-30-TS TempLog freezer, the VWR 30 cu ft touchscreen, and the CorePoint Scientific CPS-HC-FRP-30-TS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a refrigerator flammable-safe?

The interior is engineered to contain no ignition source. That means no interior light switch, no exposed thermostat contacts, no defrost heater and no fan motor inside the storage compartment, with electrical components relocated outside the cabinet or sealed. Flammable vapour is heavier than air and accumulates at the bottom of a closed cabinet, so removing every spark source from that space is the whole design objective.

What is the difference between flammable storage and explosion-proof?

A flammable material storage refrigerator has a spark-free interior and protects against ignition of vapour inside the cabinet. It sits in a normal, unclassified laboratory. An explosion-proof refrigerator additionally has exterior electrical components rated so they cannot ignite an explosive atmosphere in the room, and it is required only where the room itself is a classified hazardous location. Most laboratories need flammable storage. Which applies to your space is a facility engineering determination, not a purchasing preference.

Can I store solvents in a standard laboratory refrigerator?

No. A standard or domestic refrigerator contains ignition sources inside the storage compartment: the light switch, thermostat contacts, defrost heater and fan motor. Flammable vapour pools at the bottom of the sealed cabinet and builds concentration. This combination has caused laboratory refrigerator explosions, and storing flammables in a non-rated unit is a standard finding in laboratory safety inspections. Use a purpose-built flammable storage unit.

Which standards apply to flammable liquid storage in laboratories?

In the United States, the relevant framework generally includes OSHA regulations on flammable liquids and NFPA standards covering laboratory occupancies and flammable liquid handling, alongside your local fire code and institutional safety policy. Requirements cover quantity limits, container types and storage location as well as equipment. Your facility safety officer or environmental health and safety team should confirm what applies to your specific space and materials before you specify equipment.

What size flammable storage unit do I need?

Size to the volume of flammable material you actually hold, keeping in mind that your fire code and institutional policy may cap how much flammable liquid can be stored in a given laboratory area. Undercounter units at 4 to 5 cu ft suit a single bench or a small lab. Uprights from 14 to 30 cu ft suit shared laboratories and stockrooms. Buying more capacity than your permitted quantity allows is not useful.

Do I need a refrigerator, a freezer or a combination?

Match the temperature to the storage requirement of the material. Flammable storage refrigerators run roughly 1 to 10°C, freezers -15 to -25°C. Combination units give both compartments in one footprint with separate controls, which suits a lab needing both but short on floor space. Check that the freezer range covers what you store rather than assuming any freezer compartment will do.

What does the TS suffix mean on these models?

TS indicates a touchscreen controller, usually with onboard temperature data logging. It is worth specifying where the stored material has a stability requirement you need to evidence, not only a flammability requirement you need to contain. Flammable safety and temperature documentation are separate obligations that frequently apply to the same cabinet.

Do flammable storage units need special installation?

They plug into standard power and do not require the special wiring an explosion-proof unit in a classified location would. Standard considerations still apply: ventilation clearance at the back and sides for the condenser, door swing clearance, and a delivery route that accommodates the cabinet. Confirm placement against your facility's requirements for where flammable storage may be located within the laboratory.

Can I convert a standard refrigerator to flammable storage?

No, and it should not be attempted. Modifying a standard unit by disconnecting the interior light does not address the thermostat contacts, defrost heater or fan motor, and it voids any listing the unit had. Purpose-built flammable storage units are engineered and manufactured for the requirement. A modified domestic refrigerator will not satisfy a safety inspection and does not eliminate the hazard.

How do I know if my room is a classified hazardous location?

That determination is made by your facility engineering, safety or environmental health and safety function, based on whether flammable vapour or gas may be present in the general room atmosphere under normal or abnormal conditions. It is a formal classification, not a judgement call made at purchasing. If nobody has told you the room is classified, it almost certainly is not, but confirm rather than assume before ordering equipment on either side of the line.
