Clinical Care Recliners and Geri Chairs

Clinical recliners are selected by three specs: weight capacity, arm configuration, and positioning range. Standard clinical models are rated 300 to 350 lb, wide models reach 450 lb, and powered bariatric models go to 700 lb. Arm style determines whether a patient can be transferred laterally without lifting, which is usually the deciding factor for staff.

Three-position vs infinite-position vs tilt-in-space

A three-position recliner locks at upright, mid-recline and full recline. It is the standard for med-surg, long-term care and general recovery, and it is what most facilities buy. An infinite-position recliner adjusts continuously, which matters when a patient needs a very specific angle for respiratory comfort or reflux management. Tilt-in-space is different again: the whole seat-to-back angle rotates as a unit, so the hip and knee angles stay fixed while pressure shifts from the ischial tuberosities to the back. That last one is a pressure injury prevention feature, not a comfort feature, and it is why the Lumex FR565TG427 shows up in long-term care specs so often.

Arm configurations and why they matter for transfers

Fixed padded arms. Standard, durable, lowest cost. Fine when patients ambulate or pivot-transfer independently.

Weight capacity is not a suggestion, and it is not the same as seat width. A patient can exceed a chair's rated capacity while fitting comfortably in the seat, and the frame is what fails first. Overbed Tables: How to Choose the Right Height Range and Top Style

Overbed table selection comes down to two specs: the height adjustment range and whether the top tilts. Most clinical models cover 28 to 45 inches, which fits standard hospital beds through most low-height fall-prevention beds. Tilt tops angle toward the patient for reading and laptop use. Non-tilt tops are more durable and cost less, which is why high-turnover inpatient units usually buy them.

Height range: check this against your beds, not against the spec sheet

A 28 to 45 inch range like the Drive 13003 covers the vast majority of hospital and long-term care beds. A narrower 29 to 42 inch range like the Drive 13069 is lighter and cheaper but will not reach the low position on beds set for fall prevention. Adjustment mechanisms

Handle adjustment. Manual crank or lever. Most durable, lowest cost, requires two hands.

Glass door vs solid door

Glass doors let staff confirm stock level without opening, which reduces heat loss on a high-traffic unit. Solid doors hold temperature marginally better per opening and cost less. In practice, glass wins on units where people are grabbing blankets all shift, and solid wins where the cabinet is opened a handful of times per day.

Fluid, gel and wipe warmers
