Pharmacy Refrigerators

Purpose-Built Cold Storage From 1 to 72 Cubic Feet

A pharmacy refrigerator holds a tight, documented temperature band, most commonly 2°C to 8°C, using forced-air circulation, microprocessor control and alarms that a domestic or commercial refrigerator does not have. This collection carries 204 units from 1 cu ft countertop models through 72 cu ft triple-door uprights, plus matching freezers and combination units.

The distinction that matters most here is not brand or size. It is the temperature band the unit is built to hold. You will see both 2°C to 8°C and 1°C to 10°C across this collection, and they are not interchangeable. The tighter 2 to 8 band is what vaccine storage and most pharmaceutical labelling require. The wider 1 to 10 band gives a unit more operating headroom and suits general medical and laboratory storage where the product tolerates it.

Check what your stock actually requires before you shop by capacity. A unit that cannot hold 2 to 8 is not a cheaper version of one that can; it is a different product for a different job.

What Size Pharmacy Refrigerator Do You Need?

Size to peak inventory rather than average, and leave headroom, because an overfilled cabinet blocks airflow and produces the temperature non-uniformity that shows up in an audit. The table below maps capacity to setting.

Capacity Format Typical Setting
1 to 5 cu ft Countertop or undercounter Single exam room, small clinic, satellite dispensing point
7 to 16 cu ft Compact upright Physician office, small pharmacy, unit-level storage
23 to 33 cu ft Single or double door upright Retail pharmacy, clinic central storage, small hospital pharmacy
45 to 72 cu ft Double or triple door upright Hospital pharmacy, central distribution, high-volume compounding

At the small end, the ABS 1 cu ft countertop at 2 to 8°C and the Accucold 2.65 cu ft built-in fit where floor space has run out. At the large end, the ABS 69 cu ft with three sliding glass doors and the 72 cu ft stainless steel premier cover central pharmacy volumes.

For undercounter installations where ADA counter height matters, the ABS UCBI-0404 ADA at 4.6 cu ft is built for it, and a left-hinged version exists for door swing that fights your layout.

Glass Door or Solid Door?

Glass doors let staff confirm stock without opening, which reduces door-open frequency on a busy unit. Solid doors hold temperature marginally better per opening and cost less. The right answer depends on how often the unit is actually opened.

On a pharmacy bench where someone reaches in twenty times a shift, glass wins, because most of those openings become a glance instead. In a storeroom opened twice a day, solid wins, since the insulation advantage is real and nobody is browsing.

Most models come both ways. In the ABS VS series, model codes ending in G are glass and S are solid: compare the VS-23G glass with the VS-23S solid. So-Low uses GD and SD the same way, as in the DH4-23GD and DH4-23SD.

Sliding doors for tight aisles

A swing door on a 54 inch cabinet needs a lot of aisle to open. Sliding glass doors remove that problem entirely, which is why they appear on the larger units: the ABS 33 cu ft with two sliding glass doors and the 47 cu ft sliding door. PHCbi's MPR-S300H eco sliding glass door at 12.2 cu ft brings the same idea to a compact unit.

Refrigerator and Freezer Combination Units

Combination units put pharmaceutical-grade refrigeration and freezing in one footprint, with independently controlled compartments. They suit sites that need both but do not have room or budget for two cabinets.

The freezer side varies more than people expect, and it is the specification to check. Standard pharmacy freezing runs -25 to -15°C. Deeper options exist: the ABS RFC1030G reaches -30 to -20°C and the RFC1040G goes to -43 to -37°C, which is a different class of storage in the same cabinet.

Other combination options: the ABS RFC-16A at 16 cu ft, Follett's REFFZR21 with 14.7 cu ft refrigeration and 6.2 cu ft freezing, and PHCbi's MPR-715F. So-Low's DH-48RF at 21 cu ft is the larger option.

Variable Speed Compressors and Temperature Recovery

A variable speed compressor modulates its output rather than cycling on and off, which holds temperature in a narrower band and recovers faster after a door opening. On a unit opened frequently, that difference shows up directly in the temperature log.

Fixed-speed compressors cycle: temperature drifts up, the compressor kicks in hard, temperature drifts down, it stops. That sawtooth is normal and acceptable within a wide band, but on a 2 to 8°C requirement the peaks eat your margin. Variable speed keeps the line flatter. It also runs quieter and uses less energy, which matters when the unit sits in a working pharmacy.

The ABS VS series is built around this: the VS-12S at 12 cu ft, the VS-49G at 49 cu ft and the VS-72G at 72 cu ft.

Brands in This Collection

American BioTech Supply (ABS) supplies the largest share, with the HC, NSF, VS and SSP series covering countertop through 72 cu ft. Their model codes are readable once you know the pattern: the number is capacity, G is glass door, S is solid, LH is left-hinged, and TS indicates a touchscreen controller.

So-Low covers a very wide range in the DH and DHK families, from small glass-door units to 74 cu ft, with stainless steel variants marked SS. Migali Scientific supplies the EVOX line in refrigerator and freezer configurations. Thermo Scientific brings the TSG and TSX high performance series, including the TSX5005PA at 51.1 cu ft.

PHCbi supplies high performance pharmaceutical units including TwinGuard dual-cooling, which uses two independent refrigeration circuits so a single compressor failure does not empty the cabinet. Follett offers drawer-based configurations such as the REF45-PD with drawers and touchscreen at 45 cu ft, which suits high-turnover dispensing where staff need to find one item quickly. Also stocked: Accucold, CorePoint, Hoshizaki, True Scientific, Koolmore and Conserv.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature should a pharmacy refrigerator hold?

Most pharmaceutical refrigerated storage is specified at 2°C to 8°C, which is the band used for vaccines and the majority of refrigerated medications. Some units in this collection are rated 1°C to 10°C, which gives a wider operating band suited to general medical and laboratory storage. Your operating setpoint should follow the labelling of what you store and your facility policy, and it should be documented and monitored rather than set and forgotten.

What is the difference between a 2 to 8°C unit and a 1 to 10°C unit?

The tighter 2 to 8°C band is what vaccine storage and most pharmaceutical labelling require, and a unit rated for it is engineered to hold that narrower range across the whole cabinet. A 1 to 10°C rating is a wider band, appropriate for general medical and lab storage where the product tolerates more variation. They are not interchangeable: if your stock requires 2 to 8, a 1 to 10 unit does not meet the requirement.

Can I use a domestic refrigerator for pharmaceuticals?

No. Domestic refrigerators cycle temperature widely, have cold spots near the evaporator that reach freezing, lack the alarms and continuous monitoring that documentation requires, and use auto-defrost cycles that create temperature spikes. For vaccines in particular, freezing is irreversible and undetectable by eye. Purpose-built pharmaceutical units exist because domestic ones repeatedly failed at this in practice.

What size pharmacy refrigerator do I need?

Size to peak inventory rather than daily average, and leave headroom rather than filling the cabinet. Overfilling blocks airflow, which produces the temperature non-uniformity between shelves that gets flagged during inspection. As a rough guide: 1 to 5 cu ft for a single room, 7 to 16 for a physician office or small pharmacy, 23 to 33 for retail pharmacy or clinic central storage, and 45 to 72 for hospital pharmacy volumes.

Glass door or solid door?

Glass doors let staff confirm stock without opening, which cuts door-open frequency on a busy unit and reduces the temperature recovery load. Solid doors insulate marginally better per opening and cost less. On a bench opened many times a shift, glass usually wins. In a storeroom opened a couple of times a day, solid does.

What is a variable speed compressor and is it worth it?

A variable speed compressor modulates output continuously rather than cycling on and off, which holds temperature in a narrower band and recovers faster after door openings. On a 2 to 8°C requirement, the temperature peaks from a cycling fixed-speed compressor consume margin you may need. Variable speed also runs quieter and uses less energy. For a frequently opened unit it is worth the difference.

Do I need a separate freezer or will a combination unit do?

A combination unit gives both in one footprint with independently controlled compartments, which suits sites short on space. Check the freezer specification carefully, since it varies widely: standard pharmacy freezing runs -25 to -15°C, but units in this collection reach -30 to -20°C and -43 to -37°C. Match the freezer range to what you actually store rather than assuming any freezer compartment will do.

Does a pharmacy refrigerator come with temperature monitoring?

Most include a digital display with high and low temperature alarms, and many offer data logging or a touchscreen controller, marked TS on ABS models. Whether that satisfies your documentation requirement depends on your setting: vaccine storage programmes generally require a separate digital data logger with a buffered probe, and blood banking requires continuous chart recording. Check what your programme requires before assuming the built-in display is sufficient. See Monitoring & Accessories.

Do I need a unit with a lock?

If you store controlled substances or high-value pharmaceuticals, yes, and your state board of pharmacy or facility policy will usually specify it. Many units in this collection include keyed locks as standard. Access control is also part of the documentation picture during inspection, not just theft prevention.

How much clearance does an upright pharmacy refrigerator need?

Check three things before ordering: door swing clearance in the aisle, ventilation clearance at the back and sides for the condenser, and the delivery route including doorway widths and any lift. Large units are heavy and arrive by freight. For tight aisles, sliding glass door models remove the swing clearance problem, and undercounter or built-in units with front-breathing ventilation solve the airflow problem where a cabinet must sit in casework.
