Treadmills & Ellipticals

Commercial and Rehabilitation Cardio to 500 lb

Cardio equipment in a clinical setting is specified against different criteria than gym equipment: user weight capacity, handrail configuration, how low the speed goes, and whether the patient can be supervised closely while using it. This collection carries SportsArt commercial treadmills and ellipticals to 500 lb, LifeSpan under-desk treadmills and Body-Solid units.

The specification most often overlooked is minimum speed. A rehabilitation patient may need to walk at a pace well below what a fitness treadmill offers as its slowest setting, and a machine that will not go slow enough is unusable for the person who most needs it. Check the bottom of the speed range as carefully as the top.

Medical Handrails: The Rehabilitation Specification

Standard treadmill handrails are short side rails intended for occasional balance. Medical handrails extend along the full length of the deck on both sides, so a patient has continuous support through every step of the walking cycle.

That difference determines who can use the machine. A patient with balance impairment cannot safely release a rail partway along a short handrail and reach for the next thing; there is nothing to reach for. Full-length rails mean support is always in hand, which is what allows gait practice on a moving belt at all for someone who could not manage it otherwise.

Options with medical handrails: the SportsArt T655MS with tri-color LED and medical handrails, 500 lb capacity and a 62 x 22 inch running area, and the T663M with white LED console and medical handrails at 400 lb.

Incline and Decline

Most treadmills incline from 0 to 15 percent. A few also decline, and decline is a genuinely different training stimulus rather than an incline in reverse.

Walking downhill loads the quadriceps eccentrically, meaning the muscle lengthens under tension while controlling the descent. That is the demand of stairs, kerbs and slopes, and it is not trained by walking uphill. For a patient who manages level ground but struggles going down a hill, decline capability is the specification that addresses it.

The SportsArt T655MD offers a -3 to 22 percent range at 500 lb, and the T676 ECO-NATURAL covers -3 to 15 percent. Standard 0 to 15 percent models include the T645L at 450 lb, the T661 at 400 lb, the T663, the T665, the T673L and the T674L.

Touchscreen consoles

Senza touchscreen versions of the same platforms: the T663 with 16 inch touchscreen, the T673L-16, the T674L-16 and the T676 with 19 inch touchscreen at 500 lb. Also the T661M with white LED.

Non-Motorized and Self-Powered Treadmills

On a non-motorized treadmill the belt moves only because the user drives it, which means the machine cannot pull a patient's legs faster than they choose to move them. That safety characteristic is significant in rehabilitation.

A motorised belt sets the pace, and a patient who stumbles or fatigues has a belt continuing underneath them. A self-powered belt stops when the user stops. It also demands more effort at any given speed, because the user is overcoming the belt's resistance rather than being carried by it, which changes the training stimulus as well as the safety profile.

Options: the SportsArt G660 ECO-POWR Elite non-motorized treadmill with a fixed 4 percent incline, the G690 VERDE with a fixed 7 percent incline at 330 lb and the N685 VERDE self-powered treadmill at 330 lb.

ECO-POWR: equipment that generates rather than consumes

SportsArt's ECO-POWR range converts the user's mechanical effort into electricity fed back to the building rather than dissipating it as heat. In a facility running many hours of cardio daily, that changes the operating cost profile of the equipment over its life, and it is a measurable sustainability claim rather than a marketing one. The G-series units on this page carry it.

Ellipticals: Stride Length Is the Fit Specification

Stride length determines whether the machine fits the user, and a fixed stride that suits a 6 ft user forces a 5 ft user into an unnatural pattern. Adjustable stride resolves that, which matters in a shared facility where the same machine serves everyone.

Adjustable-stride models cover a wide span: the E874 at 17 to 29 inches, 450 lb, the E876 at 17 to 29 inches, 500 lb, the E866 at 16 to 28 inches and the E835 at 18 to 25.5 inches. Touchscreen versions: the E866-16, the E874-13 and the E876-16.

Fixed stride: the E80C at 19 inches, 330 lb, the E863 at 20 inches and the E865 at 18 to 25.5 inches. ECO-POWR ellipticals: the G866, the G874 and the G876.

Why ellipticals suit some patients better than treadmills

The foot never leaves the pedal, so there is no impact at heel strike and no risk of the foot catching a moving belt. For patients with joint pain, impact restrictions or a fear of falling on a treadmill, an elliptical delivers a cardiovascular session that a treadmill cannot. The trade-off is that it does not train the gait pattern itself, so it complements rather than replaces walking practice.

Cross trainers

The SportsArt V886 VERSO 3-in-1 cross trainer with 40 resistance levels at 500 lb and the G886 VERSO ECO-POWR version combine movement patterns in one footprint, which matters in a facility short on floor space. The S775 Pinnacle cross trainer is a further option.

Folding and Under-Desk Treadmills

Where floor space is the constraint: the SportsArt TR22F folding treadmill at 350 lb, the Body-Solid Best Fitness BFT25 folding treadmill, plus Body-Solid's Endurance T150 commercial treadmill and Endurance T25 with a 2.0 HP continuous duty motor. A general treadmill option is also listed.

On motor specifications, continuous duty rating is the number that matters rather than peak. Peak horsepower is what the motor produces briefly; continuous duty is what it sustains, and a treadmill used all day in a clinic or workplace runs continuously rather than in peaks.

Under-desk treadmills

LifeSpan's range is designed for walking while working rather than for exercise sessions: the TR1200 Omni treadmill desk with SD120/SC130 desktop at 330 lb and 2-ply belt, the TR5000 Omni at 400 lb with high mileage belt, the TR1200B Pro GlowUp under-desk treadmill, the TR5000B Pro GlowUp at 400 lb and the TX6X GlowUp at 400 lb.

Belt specification matters more on these than on a gym treadmill, because they accumulate hours at low speed all day. A high mileage belt is the difference between a unit that lasts and one that needs a belt replacement within a year of heavy office use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a treadmill suitable for rehabilitation?

Four things: full-length medical handrails on both sides so support is always in hand, a minimum speed low enough for a patient who walks slowly, adequate user weight capacity, and a deck long enough that a patient with an irregular gait is not at the edge. Fitness treadmills often fail on the first two, and a machine that will not go slow enough is unusable for the person who most needs it.

What is the difference between medical handrails and standard rails?

Standard rails are short side handles for occasional balance. Medical handrails extend along the full length of the deck on both sides, so a patient has continuous support through every step. A patient with balance impairment cannot release a short rail partway and reach for the next thing, because there is nothing to reach for. Full-length rails are what make belt walking possible for someone who could not otherwise manage it.

Why does decline capability matter?

Walking downhill loads the quadriceps eccentrically, with the muscle lengthening under tension to control the descent. That is the demand of stairs, kerbs and slopes, and walking uphill does not train it. A patient who manages level ground but struggles going down a hill has an eccentric control problem, and decline capability is what addresses it directly.

What is a non-motorized treadmill and why use one in rehab?

The belt moves only because the user drives it, so the machine cannot pull a patient's legs faster than they choose to move them, and it stops when they stop. On a motorised belt, a patient who stumbles or fatigues has a belt continuing underneath them. Self-powered belts also demand more effort at any given speed, since the user overcomes the belt's resistance rather than being carried.

What does ECO-POWR mean?

It describes SportsArt equipment that converts the user's mechanical effort into electricity fed back to the building, rather than dissipating it as heat. In a facility running many hours of cardio daily, that changes the operating cost profile over the equipment's life. It is a measurable claim rather than a marketing one, since the generated energy offsets consumption.

Why does elliptical stride length matter?

Stride length determines whether the machine fits the user. A fixed stride suiting a 6 ft user forces a 5 ft user into an unnatural pattern, and vice versa. In a shared facility where one machine serves everyone, adjustable stride resolves that. Ranges from 16 to 29 inches cover most adult users on a single unit.

When is an elliptical better than a treadmill for a patient?

Where impact or fear of falling is the limiting factor. The foot never leaves the pedal, so there is no heel strike impact and no risk of the foot catching a moving belt. That suits patients with joint pain, impact restrictions or treadmill anxiety. The trade-off is that it does not train the gait pattern itself, so it complements walking practice rather than replacing it.

Should I look at peak or continuous duty motor rating?

Continuous duty. Peak horsepower is what the motor produces briefly under maximum demand; continuous duty is what it sustains indefinitely. A treadmill running all day in a clinic or workplace operates continuously rather than in peaks, so the continuous rating is what predicts whether it will hold up. Peak figures are the larger number and therefore the one more prominently advertised.

What should I check on an under-desk treadmill?

Belt specification above all, because these accumulate hours at low speed all day rather than in sessions. A high mileage belt is the difference between a unit that lasts and one needing replacement within a year of heavy office use. Check user weight capacity and, if it pairs with a desk, whether the desk height range suits the user standing rather than seated.

What user weight capacity should I specify?

Cover your heaviest anticipated user with margin rather than sizing to the average, since a machine someone exceeds is unusable at the moment it is most needed and the situation is uncomfortable for them. The range here runs from 330 lb through 500 lb. In a clinical setting the higher capacities also generally come with a larger deck and sturdier frame, which benefits every user.
