The Journey Air Elite is a folding power chair built around a carbon fiber frame that weighs 26 lb without its battery and 29 lb with it. A single pull on the seat handle folds the chair, and it then rolls like a suitcase, so it stores in a car trunk or a closet. For a flight, the folded chair travels in the aircraft hold while the lithium battery is removed and carried into the cabin, under the conditions set out below.

Two independent brushless motors drive the chair, letting it turn on the spot within a 35.4 inch radius and pull up to a table once the armrests are flipped back. The joystick mounts on either the left or the right side and can be operated with one finger, with three forward speeds and reverse. Braking is electronic and engages automatically the moment the joystick is released, and a seat belt is fitted and should be fastened before driving.

The chair arrives assembled with battery, charger, footrests, anti-tippers and a backrest pouch. Flat-free tires front and rear remove any risk of a puncture, and a built-in USB port charges a phone while riding.

Journey states that the Air Elite is FDA registered and cleared, and that it is FAA compliant for commercial air travel; Journey recommends confirming specific airline policies 24 to 48 hours before a flight. Journey's owner's manual sets the terms for the battery: the lithium battery complies with FAA air travel guidelines, and a traveller may carry one spare battery of up to 300 Wh or two spare batteries of up to 160 Wh each, carried in the cabin rather than checked, in a protective case.

Journey's owner's manual states that the chair is for indoor use and flat, smooth outdoor surfaces, that slopes, grass, gravel and wet, icy or snowy conditions should be avoided, that gentle gradients are approached straight on rather than at an angle, and that obstacles taller than 1 inch should not be crossed.
