Commodes & Toilet Aids

Commode Chairs, Raised Seats and Toilet Support Frames

Toileting equipment addresses two separate problems: getting to the toilet, and getting on and off it. This collection carries 72 items covering both, from Drive DeVilbiss and Carex, Lumex, Rhythm Healthcare, Clarke Healthcare, R82, Gendron, Journey and Dynarex.

If the difficulty is the journey, a bedside commode brings the toilet to the person. If the difficulty is the transfer, a raised seat and support frame make the existing toilet usable. Those are different interventions, and buying one when the other is needed is the most common mismatch in this category.

The reason toileting equipment matters more than its cost suggests: night-time trips to the bathroom are a leading fall scenario for older adults, combining darkness, urgency, low blood pressure on standing and a route that has to be navigated half-awake.

What 3-in-1 Actually Means

A 3-in-1 commode serves three roles: a bedside commode with its bucket, a raised frame placed over an existing toilet with the bucket removed, and a shower chair.

That versatility is what makes it the default recommendation for a temporary or changing situation. Someone discharged after surgery may need a bedside commode for the first fortnight, then only the over-toilet frame, then nothing. One purchase covers the whole trajectory rather than three.

The caveat worth stating: a 3-in-1 used as a shower chair is an acceptable compromise rather than a purpose-built solution. The steel-framed versions are not designed for permanent wet exposure and will eventually corrode where the coating is chipped. For daily long-term shower use, a dedicated shower chair lasts longer.

Options: the Drive 11148 fixed arms with back bar at 350 lb, the 11148CE Competitive Edge 4-pack, the Classics padded fixed arms, the Carex padded 3-in-1 and the ProBasics with removable backrest.

Lumex: the 7103A Silver Collection steel commode, the 2215B aluminium frame at 300 lb, the 7108A deep seat folding and the 2195KD folding aluminium portable.

Aluminium-framed 3-in-1 commode shower chairs, which handle wet use better: the NRS18010 with flip-back arms and reclining backrest, plus the NRS185006, NRS185007 and NRS185008. Also the Journey 33321 SoftSecure with Microban and PVC versions: the dual commode shower transfer PVC chair and the version with one-step lock.

Drop Arm Commodes: The Transfer Specification

A drop arm lowers out of the way so a user can slide sideways onto the seat from a wheelchair or bed without standing. For anyone who cannot stand, that is not a convenience feature, it is the difference between using the commode and not.

A fixed arm forces a standing transfer: the user has to rise, turn, and lower themselves over the arm. Each of those steps is a point of failure for someone with weakness or poor balance, and the turn while standing is where most toileting falls happen. A drop arm removes the standing phase entirely.

Options: the Drive 11125KD, the 11125PSKD padded version, the 11101W with wheels and padded armrests and the 11120SV with wheels and footrest at 350 lb.

Lumex drop arm models: the 6433A in silver vein finish, the 6433A-2 with adjustable height, the 6438A extra wide and the 6810A VersaMode mobile commode.

Bariatric Commodes

Capacity in this category runs to 1000 lb, and seat width matters alongside it for the same reason it does elsewhere: a seat narrower than the user is unusable regardless of what the frame is rated for.

Options: the Drive 11135 drop arm at 1000 lb, the Rhythm B3650 DLX drop arm at 1000 lb, the Drive 11117N fixed arms at 650 lb and the Dynarex Bari-Max heavy duty drop arm.

Extra wide and folding: the Lumex 2190A at 19 inch seat width, 400 lb, the 7446A Imperial Collection extra wide, the 7109A bariatric folding, the Rhythm B3600F with blow moulded seat and the B3800F elongated folding commode.

Height-adjustable bariatric: the Gendron 523326 and the 523330 at 30 inches wide. Also the Drive RTL11158KDR folding frame at 13.75 inch seat width and the Pinniped padded fixed arms commode.

Raised Toilet Seats: Why Height Changes Everything

Standing up from a seated position requires hip and knee flexion beyond 90 degrees, and the force needed rises sharply as the seat gets lower. Raising the toilet by a few inches reduces that demand substantially.

This is also a post-surgical requirement rather than only a comfort measure. Hip replacement protocols commonly restrict hip flexion beyond a specified angle for a period after surgery, and a standard toilet puts the patient past that limit every time they sit. A raised seat is frequently part of the discharge equipment list for exactly that reason.

Round or elongated

Toilet bowls come in two shapes and the seat has to match, which is the most common ordering error in this category. Measure from the seat bolt holes at the back to the front edge of the bowl: roughly 16.5 inches indicates a round bowl, roughly 18.5 inches an elongated one. A mismatched seat either overhangs or sits short, and in both cases it is unstable.

Elongated: the Drive 12013 premium with lock at 300 lb, the 12403 with removable arms, the Carex hinged elongated and the RTL12608 hinged elongated.

Round: the Carex hinged standard round and the RTL12607.

Universal and locking: the PreserveTech universal at 350 lb, the PreserveTech secure lock, the Lumex 6486A with front clamp lock, the 6487RA with removable arms, the Drive 12065 with lid at 400 lb, the 12066 at 6 inch height and the Lumex Everyday adding 4.5 inches.

Why locking matters

A raised seat that shifts as the user lowers themselves onto it is worse than no seat at all, because the user is committed to the movement by the time it moves. A clamp or lock fixes the seat to the bowl so it cannot rotate or slide. For anyone transferring with reduced control, that fixing is the whole safety case for the product.

Toilet Support Frames and Assist

A support frame gives the user something to push up from with both hands, which is mechanically far more effective than pulling up on a grab bar to one side.

Pushing down through both arms recruits the triceps and shoulders symmetrically and keeps the user's centre of mass between their feet. Pulling sideways on a single bar shifts them off centre and loads one side, which is how a rise becomes a fall. Where the person has arm strength, bilateral push-up support is the arrangement to aim for.

The Lumex 6460A VersaFrame toilet safety rails, the 2195A toilet assist commode with back bar, the Journey 33320 SoftSecure Uplift toilet assist and the Carex Uplift commode assist. The SecureSeat positioning commode in large adds postural positioning.

Buckets and hygiene

The Drive 12 quart commode bucket with handle and cover and the 7.5 quart version with metal handle. Bucket capacity determines emptying frequency, and a cover matters for the carer carrying it to the bathroom. Carebag commode liners remove the emptying and rinsing step entirely, which is worth considering where the carer is elderly themselves or where infection control matters.

Pediatric Toileting and Bathing

R82's Flamingo range covers combined bath and toileting for children: the Flamingo bath and toilet chair in 4 sizes at 154.3 lb, the Flamingo High-Low shower and commode chair and the Flamingo Curo. The R82 Heron with hydraulic or powered height adjustment at 286.6 lb covers larger users.

Clarke Healthcare's Zitzi Starfish Pro combined shower and commode chairs come in three sizes and three actuation types. Manual: size 1, size 2 and size 3. Hydraulic: size 1, size 2 and size 3. Electric: size 1, size 2 and size 3.

Height adjustment on a pediatric chair is a parent protection measure as much as a positioning one: a parent lifting a growing child onto a fixed-height chair several times a day is doing a repeated manual handling task that gets harder every year. See Pediatric Seating & Positioning. Also stocked: the Drive 11114KD lightweight portable aluminium shower commode chair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 3-in-1 mean on a commode?

Three roles: a bedside commode with its bucket, a raised frame placed over an existing toilet with the bucket removed, and a shower chair. That versatility makes it the default for a temporary or changing situation, since one purchase covers a recovery trajectory that would otherwise need three separate items.

Is a 3-in-1 good enough as a shower chair?

As a compromise, yes; as a long-term solution, not really. Steel-framed 3-in-1s are not designed for permanent wet exposure and will corrode where the coating is chipped. Aluminium-framed versions handle wet use considerably better. For daily long-term showering a dedicated shower chair lasts longer and is built for the environment.

Why does a drop arm matter?

It lets the user slide sideways onto the seat from a wheelchair or bed without standing. A fixed arm forces a standing transfer: rise, turn, lower over the arm. Each step is a failure point for someone with weakness or poor balance, and the turn while standing is where most toileting falls happen. A drop arm removes the standing phase entirely.

Why does raising a toilet seat help?

Standing from a seated position requires hip and knee flexion beyond 90 degrees, and the force needed rises sharply as the seat gets lower. A few inches of extra height reduces that demand substantially. It is also a post-surgical requirement: hip replacement protocols commonly restrict hip flexion for a period, and a standard toilet puts the patient past that limit every time they sit.

How do I know if I need a round or elongated seat?

Measure from the seat bolt holes at the back to the front edge of the bowl. Roughly 16.5 inches indicates a round bowl; roughly 18.5 inches an elongated one. A mismatched seat either overhangs or sits short, and in both cases it is unstable. This is the most common ordering error in the category and it is entirely avoidable with one measurement.

Why does a raised toilet seat need a lock?

Because a seat that shifts as the user lowers onto it is worse than no seat at all: by the time it moves, the user is committed to the movement and cannot recover. A clamp or lock fixes the seat to the bowl so it cannot rotate or slide. For anyone transferring with reduced control, that fixing is the entire safety case for the product.

Is a support frame better than a grab bar?

For rising from a toilet, generally yes. A frame gives something to push up from with both hands, which recruits the triceps and shoulders symmetrically and keeps the centre of mass between the feet. Pulling sideways on a single bar shifts the user off centre and loads one side, which is how a rise becomes a fall. Bilateral push-up support is the arrangement to aim for.

What bucket capacity should I choose?

Larger capacity means less frequent emptying, which matters where the carer is doing it at night or where the user has high output. The trade-off is weight when full, since the person carrying it to the bathroom is often elderly themselves. A cover is worth having either way. Disposable liners remove the emptying and rinsing step entirely.

Do I need a bedside commode or a raised toilet seat?

It depends which part is difficult. If the journey to the bathroom is the problem, a bedside commode brings the toilet to the person. If the transfer on and off is the problem, a raised seat and frame make the existing toilet usable. Buying one when the other is needed is the most common mismatch in this category, and the question is answered by watching where the difficulty actually occurs.

Why does height adjustment matter on a pediatric commode chair?

It protects the parent as much as it positions the child. A parent lifting a growing child onto a fixed-height chair several times a day is performing a repeated manual handling task that gets harder every year, and the child does not stop growing. Hydraulic and powered adjustment move that load off the parent's back.
